Dennis J. Swinford joined MIT as Director of Campus Planning effective February 2, 2015. Dennis comes to us with more than 20 years of planning experience in the public and private sectors. Most recently, he has served as Director of Campus Planning for the University of Massachusetts, Amherst since 2010.
Prior to working at the University of Massachusetts, Dennis held the position of Principal Project Planner for the Harvard University Allston Development Group for three years. He was previously Director of Campus Planning and Design for Goody Clancy Associates, Inc., and also worked in project planning and management roles at Sasaki Associates, Inc. and Johnson, Johnson and Roy. Dennis holds the degrees of Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Master of Urban Planning from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
As Director of Campus Planning, Dennis is responsible for guiding the long-range planning for MIT’s campus environment and its facilities in support of the Institute’s overall mission of research and education. In collaboration with the Associate Provost, he oversees all aspects of campus planning and stewardship in order to enable emerging research directions, changes in educational delivery, and enhancements to student life and learning. Dennis also acts as a liaison to the broader Cambridge community on issues related to campus development.
