Area Description

Audit Division

The Audit Division evaluates MIT’s academic, research, and administrative processes and supports the Institute’s efforts to follow good practices, take informed risks, and keep assets safe. We work for the MIT Corporation Risk and Audit Committee and with managers on campus and at Lincoln Laboratory to provide insight, offer recommendations for process improvements, and inform decision-making.

Business and Digital Transformation Office

The Business and Digital Transformation Office works collaboratively with MIT’s academic, research, and administrative areas to advance business priorities through digital enablement. The office leads EVPT efforts to optimize enterprise-wide processes, modernize business systems, and improve the quality of administrative data to enable smooth delivery of administrative services.

Campus Services and Stewardship

Campus Services and Stewardship is responsible for designing, constructing, maintaining, and powering the MIT campus while advancing its accessibility, environmental safety, and sustainability.

Department of Facilities

The MIT Department of Facilities creates, cares for, and powers MIT’s physical environment, and moves people and materials around the campus. As stewards of the campus, MIT Facilities builds, maintains, and optimizes the Institute’s structures and grounds, implementing high-performance solutions to maximize campus sustainability.  Facilities provides the utilities and services necessary to advance the educational and research activities of the Institute. The Parking & Transportation team develops and manages commuter service programs for MIT’s 27,000+ faculty, students, and staff, and operates the shuttle programs across campus.

Environment, Health, & Safety (EHS) Office

EHS provides expertise, service, support, and leadership in health, safety, environmental stewardship, and sustainability while fostering a strong, innovative safety culture within the entire MIT community. We are engaged with the campus community in developing and sustaining an Environment, Health and Safety Management System to ensure that MIT not only maintains legal compliance with all applicable regulations, but also fosters environmental stewardship and safety and health performance that exceed compliance.  Our services range from occupational safety and environmental management to chemical, radiation, and biological controls for the MIT community and many of MIT’s global initiatives.

Office of Campus Planning

The Office of Campus Planning supports the MIT mission by serving as stewards of the evolving physical campus and providing services that guide and inform campus strategy and transformation. Through an inclusive and collaborative process, the office pursues the continuing creation of campus spaces that sustain and inspire the exceptional community at MIT.

Office of Sustainability (MITOS)

MITOS’s mission is to transform MIT into a powerful model—that generates just, equitable, and scalable solutions for responding to the unprecedented challenges of a changing planet. To achieve our mission, the office seeks to advance a collaborative process that engages and elevates a diverse set of voices to foster operational excellence, education, research and innovation on our campus.

Atlas Service Center

The Atlas Service Center complements many of the resources available through Atlas online. MIT faculty, staff, students, and affiliates can receive guidance and complete activities by phone, via email, and in person at the Center, located in E17.

MIT Welcome Center and Open Space Programming

The MIT Welcome Center in Kendall Square provides information and services to MIT visitors, while the adjacent open space offers community-building events and activities. Open Space Programming works closely with collaborators to create welcoming, inclusive programs designed to engage the MIT, Cambridge, and Kendall Square communities.

Office of Government and Community Relations (OGCR)

OGCR supports MIT's relationships with the City of Cambridge, the local community, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the federal government, and other industry and nonprofit partners. The Office coordinates MIT's community relations activities in Cambridge and beyond and works with the MIT community-at-large on a broad range of programs and projects. Office staff are available as a resource to members of the Institute looking for information or assistance with the government and for MIT's neighbors seeking guidance in their interactions with the Institute.

Human Resources (HR)

HR's mission is to advance a vibrant and diverse work community where individuals and groups thrive and contribute to MIT's excellence. The department’s functional areas include Benefits; Communications; Compensation; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Employee and Labor Relations; Policy and Compliance; Strategic Talent Management; and Technology and Operations. We work to provide the more than 14,000 MIT employees and their families (and many thousands of retirees) with benefits that meet their diverse needs; fair, equitable, and competitive compensation programs; and professional development opportunities that increase performance and allow individuals, groups, and leaders to excel. The department also provides services and support to the Institute in areas such as medical and family leaves, staffing services, payroll, organizational development, recognition, and more.

Information Systems and Technology (IS&T)

IS&T provides technology services in support of MIT’s mission to advance knowledge and educate students, endeavoring to maximize the impact of information technology across the Institute’s research and education enterprise.

MIT Health

MIT Health is an accredited ambulatory care center serving the health and wellness needs of the MIT community. We conduct more than 100,000 visits annually and are proud to continue a tradition of caring for the Institute community that spans more than a century. Our clinical offerings encompass multiple specialties, including dental, eye, adult primary care, pediatric primary care, mental health, obstetrics and gynecology, and sports medicine. We provide occupational and employee health services, community wellness programs, and seven-day-a-week urgent care. We sponsor the MIT Student Health Insurance Plan (MIT SHIP) in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Additionally, we work closely with MIT HR Benefits on employee health plan strategy and design.

Office of
Public Safety

International Safety and Security Program

The International Safety and Security Program supports international travel risk management for academic travel, whether individually or group for students, faculty, and staff. See resource pages on MIT’s Global Support website, primarily under Travel and Safety Abroad. The program liaises as needed with MIT Health; Student Mental Health and Counseling Services; Export Control; Emergency Management; Environment, Health & Safety; and other offices that support incident response. The program manager co-chairs the Student Safety Abroad Team, which comprises program managers for standing programs sending students abroad. MIT contracts with International SOS which provides international safety and security assistance and response pre-trip and during trips.

MIT Emergency Management

MIT Emergency Management works closely with representatives and volunteers across campus to develop and implement procedures and programs that ensure the continued operation of the Institute and to keep our community safe.

MIT Police

The MIT Police department is committed to delivering quality police and emergency services and support to all members of the Institute community. We focus on maintaining a safe academic environment, providing efficient and rapid emergency services, and educating community members on crime prevention and personal safety.

Office of the Vice President for Finance (VPF)

VPF enables Institute priorities by supporting thoughtful stewardship and effective deployment of the Institute’s financial resources. It helps the MIT community make prudent resource decisions by reporting financial data and coordinating the annual budget process. Forward-thinking and future-oriented, this office is working to create a seamless administrative experience for MIT colleagues and to make it easier for them to comply with grant, accounting, and other applicable rules. VPF oversees the operations needed to pay MIT's employees and enables them to purchase goods and services that support world-class education and research. A team-oriented office, VPF strives to exemplify financial and administrative excellence with the highest levels of integrity, inclusiveness, and accountability.
